Trenton Walks! and NJDEP to host a history-filled experience this Sunday
We’re excited about the next Trenton Walks! and N.J. Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) event taking place this Sunday, January 11. It’ll be a bold, 3.5-mile afternoon walk along Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park. Even though this is the middle of the winter, we are looking at a great weather forecast for this Sunday. Skies will be partly sunny with a high of 46, according to WeatherBug. The walk will start at the Trenton Battle Monument at 350 North Warren Street at 1 p.m. and end at about 3:30 p.m.
The N.J. Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and Trenton Walks! will host the walk along the D&R Canal State Park, which is a pivotal segment of many regional and national trails, such as the Circuit Trail Network, the September 11th National Memorial Trail, and the East Coast Greenway. Leading the walk will be Mackenzie Piggott, state trails coordinator for DEP’s Green Acres Program, and Tim Brill and Becky Taylor, co-chairs ofTrenton Walks!
Participants will travel back in time to learn about Trenton’s key role in the Revolutionary War as well as about the historic canal and railroad that helped Trenton earn its motto “Trenton Makes, the World Takes.” Upon reaching Cadwalader Park, the notable final urban park designed by famed Central Park landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, the group will head back to downtown Trenton, savoring every step of the past – and the present.
This walk will be a fresh start on a walk that was originally planned for New Year’s Day. That weather scenario – a brutally cold and snow-covered day – forced walk organizers to postpone the planned trek.
This original plan for this event was to tie into the 2026 version of First Day Hikes, an initiative led by America’s State Parks that NJDEP’s State Parks, Forests, and Historic Sites embraces each year.
Please join us this Sunday!
